Praying in the Spirit Using the Word of God for Week#23

Entry#  023 Praying to be Thankful in a Thankless Job

We often do things on a regular basis that goes unnoticed and unappreciated. The greatest jobs that exist are those that serve others. If we want to be great in the kingdom of heaven, we must seek to serve much here on the earth. But those social and civil service jobs are often frown upon, and workers sometimes receive less pay for doing them. The benefits are generally very good, however. So is it in the spiritual realm. When we are servants of Jesus Christ, we are often devalued and overlooked. But the eternal benefits are monumental. Not only will we receive stars on our crowns in heaven, we get to live in God’s favor and blessings here on earth. Being a parent, educator or homemaker are often the most thankless but important jobs we can ever do. People often overlook the value of the services offered. Many jobs can be considered thankless because people take workers for granted while they are performing those tasks. Those jobs don’t directly affect people’s lives on a daily basis, but they are often crucial to the functioning of our society. Jobs like farmer, social worker, military personnel, garbage collector, first responders, and medical professionals, and delivery people are often seen as fixtures, and not people of prestige, value or purpose. However, that thankless job may be a blessing in disguise. It can provides a source of income, it can helps us clarify and articulate our goals, it can afford us the opportunity to access and utilize our skills and talents, it can provide networking opportunities, and it can sparkle a change in our lives causing us to reevaluating our paths and do some introspection. Jesus healed 10 men at one time and only one came back to say thank you. While working on a thankless job, we may never get the recognition we deserve. But God is always keeping score. He never forgets our labors of love and sacrifice. What we make happen for other people, God will eventually make happen for us. He can give us purpose and joy in a thankless job because it may be a part of His plan for us to be there. God may have planted us at a particular place to effect change, be a light, or be a witness of His love and grace. There is always a broader purpose; God may be developing our character for greater things He has in store for us. We are not to despise the day of small beginnings, because He that has begun a good work in us will perform and complete it through us. Christ, who is the author and finisher of our faith, does not waste any of our experiences. He will bring purpose and wisdom out of all we go through. So praying to be thankful in a thankless job is choosing to see God‘s goodness in every situation. That’s why we need to be thankful in all things, for God causes them all to work out for our good.

Simple Sample Prayer:

Dear God, we come to you with thanksgiving and praise. We thank you for what you have already done, we praise you for what you are doing now, and we bless your name for what you are going to do. We recognize that every good and perfect gift comes from you, even a thankless job. We know that you can bring good out of a bad or less than ideal situation, and make every circumstance a teachable moment. Help us to learn what we need to from every place in life we find ourselves in. Help us to remember that our work is not in vain, and that if we are not weary in well doing, we will reap the benefits and blessing if we don’t give up. We ask this in Jesus’s name, Amen.
